The birth of an invention
Sometimes inventions are simply one thing: a coincidence
No academic education
The Wright brothers made the first controlled powered flight in human history in 1903. They had no academic training. The brothers were actually building bicycles at the time. Along the way, they devoted themselves intensively to the study of nature, especially the observation of bird flight. They developed their own wind tunnel, tried to imitate bird flight, and were successful.
“Crazy Yankees”
People called them the “Crazy Yankees,” which is a good term for how many scientists also like to look at inventors. On June 2, 2017, the Südkurier newspaper in Constance wrote in the article “Here the great experts were wrong”: “No wonder that the contemporaries of the aviation pioneers were convinced that man was not made for flying, otherwise he would have wings. In 1895, the Irish physicist William Thomson said that flying machines were impossible for reasons of gravity alone. The president of the English Academy of Sciences had apparently missed the fact that birds are also heavier than air.”
Flying to congresses
There are many examples where scientists were wrong. Unfortunately, these errors are difficult to research and poorly documented. In the end, though, it’s nice to see that scientists are flying to their conventions today, too.
It’s important to understand that science often errs on the side of novelty and also often blocks. Only with resounding success is the knowledge absorbed, even by skeptical scientists, and the errors blurred. Scientists are just normal people who behave in exactly the same way.
An incredible story
For Rolf Kranen, it is an incredible story itself: He wanted to develop a new product for his company with an improved cooling process and discovered a new energy source. Because, like the Wright brothers, Rolf Kranen is also the kind of experimentalist who observes nature closely. In his invention, he brought together two very different natural processes in one machine.

Water column
Rolf Kranen looked at a column of water. Due to the earth’s gravity, one liter of water has a dead weight of one kilogram. In hydropower plants, the earth’s gravity is used to generate electrical energy naturally. The water jet directed into the turbine is an effect caused by the gravity prevailing in the water column. Rolf Kranen explored the question of how much pressure is generated in the process. For this purpose, he created the demonstration model shown with a 26-centimeter-high water column.
It is to show that – under normal gravity – the pressure at the bottom of the water column is never sufficient to carry an ejected jet of water above the height of its own water column.
Rolf Kranen thought: To increase the amount of energy in the water column, one would theoretically only have to increase the weight of the liquid. At some point, the pressure of the water column would be so high that the outgoing water jet would reach the top of its own water column and it would always fill up on its own.
Traffic circle
Rolf Kranen considered how he could increase the pressure in the liquid so that the water column would become higher and higher. And he thought of a traffic circle. A gyroscope is a (rigid) body that rotates around an axis. It can otherwise move freely (free spinning top), but can also be forced with an axis in a certain direction (tethered spinning top).
The rotating gyroscope builds up a rotating force, the centripetal force. This, Rolf Kranen thought, would act on a liquid inside a spinning top if it were hollow. Vortices are created in a rotating fluid. These still carry much in them that has not been scientifically researched. Viktor Schauberger was a natural scientist who intensively studied the nature of vortices. Unfortunately, his demonstrable results have found little practical application to this day.
Based on these ideas, Rolf Kranen developed design plans and created a test system on his own. It was a path that took several years, required many changes and in which Rolf Kranen invested over one million euros from his private assets.

The proof of function: The test facility
One kilogram became four kilograms
To prove his theories, Rolf Kranen built a rotating test facility. Its interior he filled with liquid. With each doubling of speed, the weight of the liquid increased fourfold. One kilogram became four kilograms. Then, doubling the speed each time, it became 16, 64, 256, 1024 kilograms, and so on.
When accelerating, at some point the water jet exceeded the water column. This created a fountain, so to speak, with the water column functioning like a pump. This resulting pressure inside the test unit continuously supplies energy to the liquid, which always remains the same at a constant speed! The water jet achieved an enormously high flow velocity in the test system. On its way back into the water column, the water heats up considerably. Rolf Kranen measured this heating in the test facility!
Rolf Kranen discovered an energy source that was previously unknown
This mechanism releases thermal energy. For this purpose, the speed had to be adjusted in the system over many tests with the artificial gravity thus generated. It is fixed parameters where this process occurs. In nature, gravity works automatically without losing energy due to the earth’s rotation and thus the angular momentum remains constant. The earth’s rotation is not slowed down in its speed, although electricity is generated by means of water dams and gravity. Rolf Kranen observed the same effect at his test facility. It can be compared to a spinning top. A gyro requires a maximum of energy at the start. Once it has reached its speed, little energy is required to keep it running. To bring the test system up to speed and keep it there, it needs electricity. The process inside the plant does not consume any energy itself. It keeps itself going under its conservation variables.
This makes it possible to build a machine that in its combination of various natural effects generates more energy in total than it consumes!
Impossible? No. Other researchers have also achieved this. The most recent example of this: On Dec. 5, 2022, researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory initiated a nuclear fusion with a net energy gain. There is a lot we don’t know, and there is still a lot to be explored for the future.
